Västra Götaland Launches Textile Material Brokerage Initiative to Enhance Circular Economy

A new textile material brokerage initiative is launched in Västra Götaland to boost textile reuse and promote a circular economy.

Key Points

  • • Västra Götaland is introducing a textile material broker to improve textile reuse.
  • • The initiative targets both the fashion industry and public sector workwear.
  • • Collaboration includes partners like Science Park Borås and RISE.
  • • The project aims to establish a sustainable market role for textile brokerage.

Västra Götaland is set to launch an innovative textile material brokerage initiative aimed at enhancing connections between textile collectors and enterprises capable of reusing these materials. This new service, spearheaded by Västra Götalandsregionen, seeks to address the imbalance between the volume of textiles collected and the limited effectiveness of their repurposing, as noted by Lisa Lundin, a regional developer.

The project, running from July 2025 to 2026, involves several key partners, including Science Park Borås and RISE. It focuses on two main areas: the fashion industry, where brands like Gina Tricot and MQ Marqet will test new procurement chains for reused materials, and the public sector, with strategies for extending the lifecycle of workwear through repair and rebranding efforts.

Lundin emphasized the need for a cohesive structure to connect various stakeholders, many of whom currently operate in isolation. The role of the material broker will be to identify and quality assure textile flows among sorting facilities, small operators, and larger enterprises.

The initiative aims not only to establish a functional network but also to create a permanent, self-sustaining role for material brokerage within the circular economy. However, challenges remain, including the need for legislative support and consumer responsibility regarding textiles, as the current framework represents a significant market failure.

Even before its official start, the project has garnered significant interest from the business community, indicating a pre-existing demand for enhanced textile reuse solutions. Success metrics will include the number of participating firms, advisory sessions, and new collaborations, aiming to create broader impacts both regionally and nationally.
