Sweden's athletics team showcased impressive performances on the opening day of the 2025 European Team Championships in Madrid, contending with both strong individual results and adjustments due to injuries.

Elna Wester led the way by setting a new personal best in the 400 meters, clocking 52.32 seconds, which ranks her joint fifth on Sweden's all-time list for the event. "I was quite surprised by my performance today; I felt the conditions were favorable despite the heat," Wester remarked. Fanny Roos contributed significantly by earning third place in the shot put with a throw of 19.38 meters, showing consistency with multiple throws surpassing 19 meters. "I’ve found a positive rhythm in my technique," Roos noted, underscoring her confidence.

In the men's events, Carl Bengtström made headlines for establishing a new outdoor record in the 400 meters at 45.38 seconds, putting him eighth best all-time in Sweden, while Henrik Larsson achieved a seasonal best of 10.11 seconds in the 100 meters, finishing fourth overall. Additionally, Sarah Lahti placed fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:03.45. As of now, Sweden sits in eighth place in the overall team standings, with the Netherlands leading the competition.

However, the team faced a dilemma as high jumper Melwin Lycke Holm had to take the place of the injured Gabriel Wallmark in the triple jump. "It should be fun. I just hope to reach the pit to score points for the team," Lycke Holm expressed, despite his nerves. The events in Madrid will continue through Sunday, promising a thrilling competition ahead.
