The European Union is making significant strides in its Digital Identity Wallet initiative with Sweden playing a central role through Bolagsverket. A crucial meeting, attended by nearly 120 representatives from various European nations, took place in Stockholm, marking the final gathering of the EU Digital Wallet Consortium (EWC) on May 28, 2025.

David Magård, project coordinator at Bolagsverket, expressed his pride in hosting this meeting, underscoring the wallet's potential to revolutionize everyday digital interactions, particularly in travel, payment processing, and business transactions. The digital wallet is expected to officially launch by the end of 2026 and will enable citizens to securely store personal identification and critical documents, such as driver's licenses and educational certifications. All EU member states are mandated to implement this digital identity solution by December 2026.

Sara Modig, Secretary of State at Sweden's Ministry of Climate and Enterprise, noted that the wallet is vital for preserving the EU's internal market and its foundational freedoms. The EWC represents a collaborative effort between public and private sectors to develop and test practical applications for the digital wallet, ensuring it meets the varied needs of citizens across the EU.
