Sweden Faces Extreme Fire Risk Amid Dry Conditions

Sweden issues severe warnings for forest fire risks amid dry conditions in Västra Götaland.

Key Points

  • • Extreme fire risks reported in Västra Götaland due to dry weather.
  • • Public advised against outdoor grilling; no fire ban yet.
  • • Meteorologists expect sunny weather which may exacerbate fire risks.
  • • Caution is urged amidst prolonged drought, strong winds, and low humidity.

Sweden is experiencing an alarming increase in forest fire danger, particularly in Västra Götaland, as the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) warns of extremely high fire risks due to persistent dry weather and an upcoming spell of sunny days. Meteorologist Linus Falk indicated that the condition of the land is particularly dry, significantly elevating the risk of fires, especially between May 19 and May 20 when warm, sunny weather is predicted (503).

While as of May 17, 2025, authorities have not imposed an official fire ban, the public is strongly advised against outdoor grilling and any activities that could spark a fire, particularly in forested and fielded areas. Communication strategist Caroline Olausson stressed the importance of careful behavior during this severe weather condition. "We encourage the public to preferably refrain from grilling in forests and fields," she emphasized, pointing out that the combination of prolonged drought, strong winds, and low humidity has reached critical levels for fire hazards (505).

These warnings come as Sweden anticipates changes in weather patterns after May 20, suggesting the possibility of more unstable weather which may eventually alleviate some of the risk. Until then, caution remains paramount as authorities work to inform and protect the public from potential fire disasters.
