Mikael Peterson, vice chairman of Stockholm's sports committee from the Centre Party, has called on Sweden to decisively determine its stance on hosting major sports events. In a recent address, Peterson underscored the growing criticism regarding the use of sports events as platforms for propaganda by undemocratic regimes, prompting thought on whether Sweden should allow such practices to set international sports standards.

Peterson expressed dissatisfaction with the current funding model, which primarily relies on local municipalities and lacks significant state support. He argued that without government backing, Sweden's ability to compete for large-scale international events is severely compromised. "For Sweden to host events that reflect our values of sustainability and human rights, there must be a commitment at the national level," he stated.

Highlighting Denmark's commitment of 15 million kronor for the upcoming 2029 UEFA European Championship, he pointed to national support as a critical element for successful bids. Peterson believes a joint Swedish-Danish application is feasible but requires coherent support from all government levels. The Swedish Football Association and the Danish DBU have already submitted a preliminary application, with a final decision on the bid expected in December 2025.

He emphasized the necessity of an open dialogue between the government and local municipalities to forge an international sports strategy that positions Sweden as a responsible, sustainable, and democratic host nation.
