Sweden Extends Bio+ Program to Propel Bioenergy Research Until 2030

Sweden extends its Bio+ program to 2030, boosting funding to enhance bioenergy research and sustainability.

Key Points

  • • Bio+ research program extended to 2030 with a budget of 706 million kronor.
  • • An additional 195 million kronor allocated for 2026-2030.
  • • The program aims to improve resource efficiency and innovation in bioenergy.
  • • Since 2021, approximately 100 research projects have been funded under Bio+.

Sweden's Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten) announced the extension of its Bio+ research program, allowing it to continue through 2030 with a total budget increase to 706 million kronor. The program aims to enhance sustainability and competitiveness in the bioenergy sector, with an additional allocation of 195 million kronor earmarked for 2026-2030 to strengthen bioenergy technologies.

As bioenergy faces heightened scrutiny, program manager Vera Nemanova emphasized the need for innovative technologies and efficient value chains to maximize the use of bio-based residuals and by-products in a climate where competition for biomass is intensifying. "Bioenergy is one of Sweden's strengths," stated Benny Fillman, another program manager, asserting that with appropriate investment, Sweden can lead in both domestic and export markets.

Since its inception in 2021, Bio+ has funded around 100 research projects and developed six innovation clusters, demonstrating the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in improving resource efficiency. Åsa Forsum, head of the Energy Agency, stressed the necessity of grounding decisions in scientific research to confront complex sustainability issues effectively.

The program’s effectiveness, confirmed by a 2024 evaluation, underlines its pivotal role in navigating growing demands for efficiency and sustainability in the energy landscape, ultimately shaping a robust transition to renewable energy solutions.
