Sweden has committed to a significant military investment by purchasing the German-made IRIS-T SLM air defense system for 9 billion kronor (approximately €800 million). Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Defense Minister Pål Jonson announced this strategic acquisition during a press conference at Gotland's P18 regiment on June 23, 2025. The initiative aims to bolster the defense of Gotland, an island of strategic importance in the Baltic Sea, which has been increasingly viewed as critical to Sweden’s national security amid escalating regional tensions.

The IRIS-T SLM system includes seven launch units supported by a total of 49 vehicles and is designed to defend against a range of aerial threats – including drones, helicopters, fighter jets, and cruise missiles. The system is equipped with a range of 40 kilometers and can intercept targets at altitudes of up to 20 kilometers. Deliveries of the air defense system are expected to commence in 2028.

During the press conference, Prime Minister Kristersson emphasized the importance of air defense and noted the lessons learned from the war in Ukraine, where similar technologies have been effectively deployed. He stated, "The technology behind the IRIS-T is proven in Ukraine, highlighting its capability to enhance our nation's security against aerial threats."

This procurement represents a larger strategy by the Swedish government to strengthen its military posture, echoing a consensus reached with the opposition that recognizes air defense as an essential area for investment. The shift towards reinforcing Gotland's defenses underscores Sweden's commitment to responding proactively to regional security challenges and maintaining military readiness in a changing global landscape.
