Svenska kraftnät has announced a groundbreaking initiative to increase the electricity transmission capacity between northern and southern Sweden by 800 MW by 2029. This ambitious project, which involves an investment of over 4 billion SEK, will not require the construction of new lines but will focus on renewing and upgrading existing substations. Key upgrade sites include Vittersjö, Gävle, and Bäsna in Dalarna.
The initiative is part of the Nordsyd program, aimed at raising the overall transmission capacity from the current 7,300 MW to 10,000 MW by 2040. Early measures are projected to boost capacity to 8,100 MW by 2029, benefitting electricity prices in southern Sweden. According to Daniel Gustafsson, head of the power systems division at Svenska kraftnät, this upgrade is equivalent to the electricity consumption of three medium-sized cities like Uppsala and Örebro, suggesting significant regional impact on energy usage.
Established in 1992, Svenska kraftnät manages a 16,000 km network of high-voltage transmission lines, ensuring a balance between electricity consumption and production across Sweden. The funding for these upgrades will primarily come through fees from regional networks and large electricity producers utilizing the national grid.
