Birgitta Lanér Sjöström, vice chair of the democratic committee in Trelleborg, has publicly defended her record in response to criticism from fellow council member Nina Dakwar of the Christian Democrats (KD). During a municipal council meeting, Dakwar accused Sjöström of not fulfilling her duties effectively. In her rebuttal, Sjöström explained that her ability to act has been hampered by the restrictions placed on her role, particularly by the chairman of the committee.
"I can’t do more than the space I am given," she stated, emphasizing her frustrations over being sidelined and her proposals for committee initiatives not being accepted. The democratic committee's goal is to promote strategic development in democracy and community engagement, but Sjöström lamented that she has been unable to implement her ideas for workshops on work planning and budgeting, which were also rejected. Her response highlights ongoing challenges within the local political structure and underscores concerns about the functioning of democratic processes in Trelleborg.
