Public Opinion Shifts Toward Sweden Democrats in Future Government

Polls indicate growing support for the Sweden Democrats' inclusion in a future government.

Key Points

  • • 49% of current government voters support SD's inclusion in future government
  • • Liberals face opposition on SD coalition, with 52% of their voters against it
  • • Leadership transition in the Liberals adds complexity to the SD debate
  • • Polling reflects a divided electorate on SD's role in the next government

A recent SVT/Verian poll reveals that nearly half (49%) of voters from the current governing parties in Sweden are supportive of including the Sweden Democrats (SD) in a future government following the 2026 elections. This significant finding marks a growing acceptance among voters for SD's participation under a potential coalition led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who would allow SD to hold ministerial positions.

Despite this potential popularity for SD, substantial opposition exists; 26% of voters still disapprove of such an arrangement. This emerging sentiment could play a pivotal role as the political landscape starts to take shape ahead of the elections. Notably, the Liberals party stands in stark contrast, with 52% of their voters firmly against including SD in any governing coalition. This presents a unique challenge as the Liberals approach a leadership change, with Simona Mohamsson poised to become the new party leader. Her stance on the inclusion of SD will be crucial for solidifying support among the party's base.

The Verian poll, conducted between June 11 and June 18, involved 1,570 randomly selected participants aged 18 to 84 and signifies a fractured electorate on the issue of SD's role in future government formation. Per Söderpalm, Verian’s head of opinion, emphasizes that SD's potential inclusion is likely to dominate the discourse in the lead-up to the pivotal elections.
