In a significant win for labor advocacy, undersköterskor (assistant nurses) in Olofström have successfully secured salary increases after effectively engaging with local politicians. Historically, these healthcare professionals have had some of the lowest salaries in Sweden. Over the past two years, the local union, Kommunal, has adeptly utilized their understanding of local politics to influence decision-makers.

Anette Modin, the local union leader, emphasized the importance of educating union members on political processes to enhance their advocacy efforts. Last year, a total of 1.1 million SEK was allocated exclusively for salary enhancement for these workers. Following concerns raised about the correct usage of these funds, an additional 500,000 SEK has now been dedicated to further support them.

The recent funding will specifically benefit 285 long-term employed undersköterskor, who have been with the municipality for over a decade. Modin pointed out that encouraging active participation in political discussions, such as drafting motions and collaborating with political entities, is crucial. This approach not only empowers the workers but also aims to make Olofström an attractive employer in the healthcare sector, thereby helping retain skilled staff within the municipality.
