A coalition including Scania, AstraZeneca, and Södertälje municipality has signed a declaration of intent to construct a new tunnel beneath the Södertälje Canal to address critical infrastructure vulnerabilities. This section of road is recognized as one of Sweden's most crucial yet fragile transport links, heavily used for logistics and commuting.
Currently, the Södertälje Bridge, over 60 years old, serves as the only major connection between the Stockholm area and southern Sweden, impacting over 2.4 million residents. In light of heightened security concerns following Sweden's NATO membership and recent geopolitical developments in Europe, the necessity for robust infrastructure has become apparent. During incidents like breakdowns or natural disasters, the reliance on this single route poses significant risks to supply chains, particularly for export-dependent companies such as Scania and AstraZeneca.
Christian Levin, CEO of Scania, stressed the importance of this connection, stating, "A functioning connection between Stockholm and southern Sweden is crucial for us, our employees, and suppliers." Similarly, Per Alfredsson, CEO of AstraZeneca, highlighted that ensuring deliveries of essential medications makes this route strategically vital. The coalition urges the government to include the new tunnel in the national infrastructure plan to mitigate potential disruptions and enhance national preparedness.
