Brookfield Asset Management, a Canadian investment firm, has announced a significant plan to establish an artificial intelligence center in Strängnäs, Sweden, with a projected investment of 95 billion SEK. The initiative is set to create between 1,000 to 3,000 new jobs over the next 15 years, with 1,000 permanent positions anticipated once the project is fully operational.

The new AI center will be built on a 350,000 square meter plot in Gorsingeberget, on the outskirts of Strängnäs. The municipality plans to sell the land to Brookfield for 525 million SEK and will provide the company exclusive rights for the next two years to plan and develop the facility. Unlike typical data storage centers focused on server halls, this facility will concentrate on the production of digital services, highlighting a shift towards innovative AI infrastructure.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson welcomed Brookfield's investment as a landmark moment for the country’s technology sector. During a press conference in Strängnäs, he noted that the establishment of this center represents one of the largest investments in AI infrastructure in Sweden and is particularly significant for him as it takes place in his hometown. Kristersson emphasized the job creation and economic benefits this project will usher in, considering Strängnäs's educated workforce and relatively low unemployment rate of around 6%.

This initiative highlights a broader trend of increasing investment in AI and technology sectors across Sweden, positioning the nation as a critical player in the global digital landscape. Local officials are optimistic about the positive impact of the AI center on the community and regional economy, marking a milestone in the evolution of Strängnäs as a tech hub in the Södermanland region.
