Key Points

  • • Brookfield Asset Management to invest 95 billion kronor in an AI facility in Strängnäs.
  • • The investment could create 1,000 to 3,000 jobs over 15 years.
  • • Strängnäs municipality will sell land to Brookfield for the project.
  • • Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson welcomes the initiative as a leap for AI infrastructure in Sweden.

Brookfield Asset Management, a Canadian investment firm, has officially announced plans to establish a significant artificial intelligence (AI) facility in Strängnäs, Sweden, as revealed on June 5, 2025. With an investment estimated at 95 billion kronor, this endeavor could become the largest foreign direct investment in the country to date. The project is expected to create between 1,000 and 3,000 jobs over the next 15 years, with a commitment to 1,000 permanent positions, according to local officials from Strängnäs municipality.

To facilitate this substantial development, the municipality plans to sell 350,000 square meters of land to Brookfield for 525 million kronor and will grant the firm exclusive planning rights for the proposed AI center over the next two years. Jacob Högfeldt, the chairman of the municipal council, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "This project is gigantic in every respect. 95 billion is an enormous amount of money and is also crucial for Sweden's independence in this area."

Strängnäs, with a population of approximately 40,000, is the third-largest municipality in Södermanland County. The region is noted for its high level of education, with one-third of residents holding higher education degrees. However, the specialized skill set required for the forthcoming job opportunities may mean that Brookfield will need to attract talent from outside Strängnäs. The proximity to larger urban areas, with over 3 million residents within an hour's commute, was a key factor in Brookfield's decision to choose this location.

Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson applauded the investment, highlighting its potential to position Strängnäs as one of the largest data centers of its kind in Europe. He termed it a significant step for AI infrastructure within Sweden and expressed personal pride in the project's location, given that it is in his hometown.
