Kristianstad has been awarded the title of Årets avfallskommun (Waste Municipality of the Year) for the second consecutive time, as recognized by Avfall Sverige, the national organization for waste and recycling. This award underscores the municipality's strong commitment to sustainable waste management practices, with residents recycling approximately 50% of their waste—substantially higher than the national average of 40%.
In addition to its impressive recycling rates, residents of Kristianstad generate only 122 kilograms of residual waste per person, compared to the national average of 143 kilograms. Johan Karlsvärd, CEO of Renhållningen Kristianstad, emphasized the crucial role of community engagement in achieving this recognition. He expressed his gratitude and highlighted plans to ramp up reuse initiatives, including a new facility, Returen, set to open in spring 2026.
The municipality's strategies over the past 15 years, such as building new recycling centers and enhancing waste collection systems, have significantly driven these successes. Jenny Westin, a senior advisor at Avfall Sverige, commended Kristianstad as a model for the entire country, citing effective waste management and high public satisfaction. To commemorate this achievement, Renhållningen Kristianstad will host an Open House event at Returum, inviting the community to participate in the celebrations.
