A new outreach initiative in Sweden, known as Tandemturné, aims to elevate public awareness about elderly care through a series of engaging lectures and discussions. Running from May 4 to May 27, 2025, this initiative involves researchers cycling across southern Sweden to facilitate conversations on aging and health at local libraries and community centers.

Pernilla Alencar Siljehag, a PhD student from the Aging Research Center, is at the forefront of this initiative. She will cover a challenging 90 km route from Bromölla to Tomelilla, where she plans to present valuable findings from her research on the transition to elderly care, a critical subject affecting many families. Siljehag noted that early discussions about transitioning to elderly care are often neglected, despite their importance.

Her research indicates a significant statistic: about 50% of elderly care recipients enter the system directly after a hospital stay. Siljehag’s work emphasizes the relationship between pre-care healthcare visits and the level of care received, pointing to the urgent need for better planning and coordination in service delivery. The event, supported by the Sten K Johnson Foundation and organized with the SWEAH research school, represents a unique blend of academic insight and community engagement, promoting crucial dialogue about elderly care issues among the public.
