Industry Leaders Demand Political Action on Food Security

Industry leaders in Sweden call for greater political commitment to food production amid public concerns about national security.

Key Points

  • • 98% of Swedes believe a robust food system is essential.
  • • Only 1 in 6 Swedes think politicians take food production seriously.
  • • Björn Hellman criticizes politicians for misinformation.
  • • 61% prefer 'Swedish' food over cheaper options, linking it to national security.

Recent allegations from industry leaders have highlighted a significant disconnect between Swedish politicians and the strong public sentiment regarding domestic food production. A Demoskop survey, conducted for Livsmedelsföretagen, revealed that 98% of Swedes view a robust food production system as vital, particularly in times of crisis or war. Despite this, only one in six respondents believe politicians are taking the matter seriously.

Björn Hellman, CEO of Livsmedelsföretagen, has been vocal in his criticism, accusing politicians of spreading misinformation about the food sector rather than supporting its development. He stated, "The pursuit of cheap political points is damaging the credibility of those who provide food and beverages in Sweden."

Importantly, the survey also indicated that 61% of Swedes prefer Swedish food options over cheaper imports, emphasizing a public inclination towards local produce as a component of national security. Hellman argues for a parallel commitment to food supply alongside military defense, explaining, "Without food and drink, the military's strength is irrelevant." This ongoing discourse underscores the urgent need for political accountability in strengthening Sweden's domestic food production to enhance national preparedness.
