In Umeå, the long-awaited installation of the city's first wheelchair-accessible swimming ramp has been completed, fulfilling a commitment made six years ago. Previously, residents with mobility challenges faced significant barriers to accessing local swimming areas, as there were no facilities allowing wheelchair users to enter the water. The new ramp, located at Nydalasjön, is part of a gradual effort to enhance accessibility in public spaces. Ari Leinonen, chairman of the leisure committee, emphasized, "We are starting here," signaling plans for further improvements in the future.
Moreover, the municipal council is considering a budget proposal to allocate 250,000 kronor for an additional ramp at Norrmjöle havsbad, demonstrating ongoing efforts to improve access for all community members.
