Swedish pole vaulting star Armand Duplantis demonstrated his exceptional skill by breaking his own stadium record at the Oslo event on June 12, 2025, with a leap of 6.15 meters. This achievement surpasses his previous record of 6.02 meters set in 2022. Facing significant challenges due to the cold weather, which he acknowledged affected his performance, Duplantis experienced two missed attempts at 6.03 meters before finally clearing it and subsequently achieving his record-breaking vault.
The chilly temperatures, particularly during the evening, made competition difficult. Duplantis spoke to SVT about the struggle: "Pole vaulting can be tough when it gets colder in the evening. It's hard to sprint and run the same way." Moreover, he had to compete in long tights instead of lighter pole vaulting gear after realizing he hadn’t changed into appropriate clothing for the conditions, a mistake he later reflected on, stating that he had learned to dress warmly from his experiences in Sweden.
Despite the adverse conditions, Duplantis successfully concluded the competition early after his record achievement. Looking forward, Duplantis is motivated to further his success at the upcoming Diamond League gala in Stockholm, where he aims to set a world record on Swedish soil. Notably, earlier in 2023, he had already set an indoor world record of 6.27 meters in Clermont-Ferrand, France, enhancing his reputation as a leading figure in the sport.
Duplantis’s remarkable performance in Oslo not only showcases his talent but also highlights his resilience under challenging circumstances, making him a celebrated athlete in Swedish sports history.
