In a troubling case from Umeå, an 80-year-old dementia patient named Marianne suffered bruises that her family claims were inflicted by a caregiver during a shower. The incident, which has raised serious concerns over care practices at the facility, is currently under investigation by local authorities after the severe condition of Marianne was disclosed in April 2024.
Investigations revealed that the bruises were inconsistent with falls or natural causes, implicating the caregiver's actions. This caregiver had a history of rough treatment toward patients, having been previously suspended twice for similar incidents. Despite these alarming past behaviors, the individual continued to work at the facility until the recent allegations surfaced.
Following the incident, the Umeå municipality conducted an internal review which confirmed the findings about Marianne’s bruises. In a decision that has sparked public outcry, the municipality allowed the caregiver to resign, granting them a severance package of 132,000 kronor, roughly equivalent to six months' salary. Notably, the municipality did not file a police report after the previous suspensions, and an ongoing police investigation into the most recent incident was later dropped due to insufficient evidence.
Carin Nilsson, chair of the elderly committee in Umeå, has faced calls for transparency regarding the municipality's handling of the case. The municipality's communication team described the severance agreement process as an unusual measure, suggesting that breakdowns in trust can lead to such outcomes.
The municipality has yet to formally address the incident or respond to media inquiries, intensifying concerns over accountability in the care provided to vulnerable elderly patients in their facilities.
